“Proper” gain structure is relatively easy to understand because most of us recognize that flashing red lights on audio devices typically indicates that something bad is happening.

When the gain structure of a PA system is optimized, the end result is low noise and maximized headroom.
When the gain structure of a PA system is poorly managed, the end result is high noise and minimized headroom.

The goal is low noise and maximum headroom.
